Simon and Jen Burden
Third generation farmer Simon and his wife Jen are the couple behind Red Down Beef and Lamb.
They had always known that their homegrown, grass-fed beef and lamb had a delicious flavour due to the excellent feedback that they received from the friends and family with whom they had shared it. When Jen decided to take a career-break from teaching in the local secondary school in 2023, Red Down Beef and Lamb was born – initially just selling from a small shop on the farm before expanding to the local markets in Launceston.
Simon is a keen rugby player and can be found on the rugby pitch for his local second team most Saturdays. An active member of Young Farmers for many years; he was part of the winning tug of war team at the national championships in 2006.
A former languages teacher, Jen has previously lived in both Spain and Italy and loves to cook dishes from both countries. She is also very passionate about the importance of good-quality home cooked meals. Take a look at some of her favourites on our recipe pages.
The Children
Due to the busy nature of the farm, the three Burden boys are often brought in to help out. From blocking gaps to stop sheep going in the wrong direction, carrying buckets of feed to the animals in the winter or helping out on a market stall – the boys’ talents are endless!
If you come to the farm to buy from the shop, you’ll most likely be greeted by one of the boys busying themselves in the yard.
Tess the Sheepdog
The newest (and possibly cutest) member of the team is Tess our Border Collie. Her hobbies include rounding up the sheep, moving the cattle and chasing birds. She’s also a huge fan of a tummy-tickle!
Any visitors to the farm’s shop are usually met by Tess who loves to make sure everyone’s happy with their purchases.
